It is probably hazardous that I am penning my thoughts/beliefs on the issue of Women’s choice even as the drama is unfolding in cities and States across the United States of America. But it is hard for me, armed with anecdotal evidence at best, to look in the other direction and pretend that what the anti-choice, mostly-old-white-conservative-boys, are after is all about the rights of the unborn child, which would be more than lofty. Across America, the Conservative movement and legislatures are shouting from the hill tops that the Caucasian majority- and way of life - can only survive if the Caucasian woman stays reproductive at all costs, including in cases of rape and incest.
The case from the ultra-conservatives, muscled by prominent talk show hosts, is a simple one: The White majority is no longer an overwhelming one. According to these policy-hunks and talking heads, the issue is a black or white matter with two possible ways in which it can be resolved: 1) Cut-off the penises of minority men and or make their women barren; 2) Keep every Caucasian woman actively and often involved in childbearing.
Disappearing Caucasian Majority
As far as controlling population growth among Minorities, it seems as if the Republican lawmakers have figured out that it is a losing battle. Minorities, especially the Hispanic population, are giving birth like they are mounting a crusade against the “mission” of the very Planned Parenthood that Conservative Republicans are at war with for allegedly sponsoring abortion clinics. Even by conservative estimates it is projected that Hispanics will soon be surpassing the Caucasian population if the current trends are not reversed.
A large part of this brouhaha is therefore about disrupting the expansion of the Latina population and the ensuing power and control that come with. (Fact is this fringe of Republicans could care less if there was evidence that Hispanic / Black/ minorities were committing the majority of abortions). This anti-abortion campaign is a fight by the Ultra-Conservative to protect the White Majority and hegemony at the expense of the Bill of Health of the Caucasian woman.
It readily explains the number of very high profile Republican lawmakers that are on record for making incredulous statements about how rape does not result in pregnancies because the body of a woman has natural ways of deleting that which is conceived in the ungodliness and ugliness of rape.
But what gets me most about
this matter is the fact that no two women are the same. The excruciating menstrual
pain that some women experience is more of a horror movie story for other
women. Even a female MD who does not have that kind of pain cannot speak to it. What then equips some politicians to want to creep into the bodies of women to
make decisions for them? How preposterous! How can they in good conscience be condemning Arabs that ask their wives to be covered up while they are shutting up women in the United States?
Sex and pregnancy – The Decider-in-chief
Prevalent conventional wisdom attributes responsibility and concurrent blame on the woman for pregnancies and abortions. There is always a confounding and convenient refusal to revisit the chronology of events leading to any pregnancy. For instance, did the man willingly unzip his pants? Could he have withheld sex and an attendant pregnancy?
I think it is a crucially essential beginning point that needs to preface every conversation on Choice. It is the point at which men are more than empowered to determine the future – pregnancy or no pregnancy. It is a Choice that men face every second of every day, perhaps the neediest choice of most every man. And if most men had their way, they would rather every desirable woman out there walk naked, readily available to satisfy their sexual desires. The fact of the matter as we all know is that there are consequences, and most men will admit that pregnancy is the last thing on their minds at the time of unzipping their pants for sex.
The point, if I may, is that men – including the Viagra/Cialis-pill-popping-old-boys-club of legislators, cannot be honestly talking about refusing a woman’s Choice when it is known that the man equally holds and wills the power whether or not to indulge in sexual activity leading to pregnancy. I would think that the better way to deprive the woman of her right to choose is for the men to make different choices themselves, including using and doubling down on condoms, not ejaculating in the woman, etc, etc.
You basically give up on that right, as a man, when you decide to drop down your pants and go unprotected. Giving up on this right does not then empower against a woman’s free expression of Choice. For consenting parties that have discussed the matter and come to an understanding of what they want, it is perfectly understandable if they hold each other to earlier agreements that one party may want to depart from.
In a marriage, for instance, most couples have an understanding whether or not they are going to be pregnant and have kids – unless the Divine Master has a different plan and blessing. When it is not the plan some couples talk about having a surprise baby or unplanned baby. The virulent rhetoric from the Conservative Right cannot therefore be targeted at married women. It is a vitriolic and assault against single women, mandating these same ones to assume responsibility for decisions that are forfeited by men when they freely chose to drop their pants.
Conservative Hypocrisy
There is no explaining why the Republican Party, a party that otherwise finds every government program intrusive, is intransigently in favor of legislating for invasive vaginal ultrasounds for women. Can the government get any more invasive than when it nestles itself in the underpants of the woman? Even those with blinders can see through the charade. It is a numbers game. The more educated and urbanized the Caucasian has become, the more likely it is for them to have fewer kids compared to the rural population. It has been precipitating a drop in Caucasian numbers… And there couldn’t have been a worse time to sprinkle some salt to the wound, to talk about an imminent legalization of 11 million “illegal aliens” (mostly Hispanics).
I can share this thought for sure: fair laws that cater to the minority today will cater to the new Caucasian minority tomorrow. The saving grace, meantime, is that the vessels making the loudest noise are a disappearing minority. Many more Americans are decent people who see others in themselves… and themselves in others.
