The Bakweri Traditional Marriage

This narration outlines the formal procedure of acquiring a wife as was prescribed by Bakweri elders more than 200 years ago. I remember very well that this procedure was still in vogue as recent as 60-70 years ago. The process of acquiring a wife is in three phases:

1. The approval of the parents, particularly the mothers of the spouses-elect.
2. Sealing of the marriage contract (efeyo).
3. The wedding.
